The EOS Network Foundation (ENF), in partnership with Upland and Aerial, is proud to announce a groundbreaking initiative that will propel the EOS network beyond its status as the world’s first carbon-neutral blockchain to become a proactive Blockchain network for climate change.
A blockchain network that is climate-positive means that its activities not only achieve net-zero carbon emissions, but also create environmental benefits by removing more CO2 from the atmosphere.
Carbon offsetting is the process of compensating for greenhouse gas emissions by investing in projects that reduce or remove an equal amount of carbon from the atmosphere. This mechanism helps combat climate change and promote sustainable development. As the Web3 ecosystem grows, practices like carbon offsetting must be adopted to ensure a greener future.
Recognizing the importance of carbon offsets in mitigating the environmental impact of blockchain technology, the EOS Network Foundation has sought to partner with Aerial, a leading sustainability platform, and Upland, a real-world metaverse super-app that simulates multiple aspects of life and the economy.
The EOS network’s consensus mechanism consumes much less energy than many other cryptocurrencies. For example, a single transaction in the EOS network requires only 0.00122923 kilowatt-hours (KWh), making it one of the more environmentally friendly options.

In order to further understand the carbon footprint of EOS, it is necessary to evaluate the methods used to calculate the carbon footprint. By conducting a comprehensive survey of block producers (BPs) within the EOS network, the EOS Network Foundation has collected important information about total energy consumption.
These findings show that:
80% of BP monitors its energy usage in real time.
60% of total energy depends on nuclear power and 20% on wind and solar power.
The average service life of block production equipment exceeds 24 months, reflecting a conscious effort towards sustainable development.
About 75% of the e-waste BP generates is sent to recycling centers, and 25% is reused.
The EOS network is architected to consume low power while delivering record-breaking scalability and throughput, blending the effectiveness of an immutable, decentralized system with environmental responsibility. EOS is one of the greenest blockchains in the world, with an annual carbon footprint of just 242 tons of CO2, a figure that has been fully offset since 2018 thanks to the pioneering efforts of EOS Authority, the EOS block producer team.
Based on these calculations, the EOS Network Foundation determined the carbon footprint of the EOS network.
The EOS Network Foundation has chosen to invest in a tree planting project in Zunyi, Guizhou Province, China, in recognition of the contributions of the EOS China community.

The project involves planting native species on barren lands, thereby increasing greenhouse gas removals and contributing to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), a set of 17 goals adopted by the United Nations in 2015 to call for global action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure peace and prosperity for all by 2030.

The project’s main objectives include soil and water conservation, generating income and jobs for local communities, sequestering greenhouse gases, and enhancing biodiversity conservation.
To date, the project has:
Supporting sustainable development – Goal 1: No poverty, Goal 5: Gender equality, Goal 6: Achievement of clean water and sanitation.
50,061 hectares of forest were successfully planted on previously degraded lands.
It effectively removes an average of 731,897 tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year, and more than 21 million tonnes of carbon over its lifetime.
More than 16,000 jobs have been created for local villagers, 70% of whom are women.
The project also plays a vital role in protecting the endangered black leaf monkey.

Upland, an open web 3 platform that maps the real world to the metaverse, has been actively involved in EOS’s sustainability efforts as a carbon offset sponsor since 2021. Their own sustainability efforts also extend beyond blockchain infrastructure, helping to power the Upland metaverse by offsetting the carbon footprint of cloud services.
“We are thrilled to be working with the EOS Network Foundation on this groundbreaking effort to achieve climate positivity,” said Danny Brown-Wolf, Chief of Staff at Upland. “Upland has been committed to environmental sustainability since its founding. We are honored to help EOS become a climate-positive blockchain network.”
Upland has selected three projects in Brazil, the United States, and Germany, all of which have cities open in the Upland game.

GreenTrees is reforesting one million acres of marginal farmland in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley.
To date, GreenTrees has planted more than 42 million trees on 120,000 acres of land in partnership with private landowners.
Tree planting activities generate millions of tons of verified carbon credits that are registered with the American Carbon Registry (ACR). These credits account for the majority of domestic forestry carbon credits registered on the voluntary market.

The project enables farmers to harness and enhance the soil’s potential as a carbon sink, sequestering CO2 from the atmosphere and storing it permanently in the soil where it belongs, with far-reaching benefits that farmers can track through a digital version of their farm on the Klim platform once they register. The validity of the farm data is verified by Klim using publicly available data.
Farmers then create individual digital fields for implementing the project scenarios. The areas of these fields are verified by Klim using remote sensing data. In addition, farmers can participate in various management modules to generate greenhouse gas emission rights. Thus, the annual management scenarios created by farmers are validated every year and used to calculate climate change mitigation performance and remuneration compared to a 3-year baseline.

The project aims to protect forests located in one of the areas with the highest deforestation rates in the Amazon biome: the municipality of La Brea. The "arc of deforestation" has reached the southern part of the municipality of La Brea, making it one of the most deforested municipalities in the Amazon biome over the past decade.
Besides causing damage to natural ecosystems, land use changes have also triggered serious social conflicts due to the acquisition of land for agricultural and pastoral activities, leading to the expulsion of family-scale forest harvesters from the area.
The EOS Network Foundation has partnered with Aerial, a sustainability platform working with proven environmental efforts around the world, to actively reduce carbon emissions while incentivizing others in the blockchain industry to adopt positive climate strategies.
“Partnering with the EOS Network Foundation and Upland on this positive climate initiative is a significant milestone in the blockchain industry’s sustainability journey,” commented Andreas Horner, CEO of Aerial. “We are honored to be working with such forward-thinking organizations who are committed to environmental responsibility and making significant positive change.”
The EOS Network Foundation and its partners hope to set a new standard for sustainability within the blockchain industry. Through their actions, they hope to inspire and encourage other networks and applications to adopt positive climate strategies. They believe that by working together, they can create a sustainable digital economy and have a lasting positive impact on our planet.
The EOS Network Foundation’s partnership with Upland and Aerial exemplifies the power of collaboration to have a meaningful impact on the environment.
By calculating carbon footprints, offsetting emissions through sustainable projects, and promoting green practices, these organizations inspire others in the Web3 ecosystem to take similar initiatives.
As climate change continues to pose a significant threat, continued efforts to combat it are critical. In proactively combating climate change, ENF sets a commendable example and serves as a catalyst for a more sustainable future for Web3.
