Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta Platforms, has recently unveiled the Meta AI chatbot1. This AI assistant is designed to be an answer to OpenAI’s ChatGPT. Initially, it will be available to a limited group of U.S.-based users starting from September 27, 2023. The Meta AI chatbot will be integrated with popular social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp. Additionally, it will also be compatible with Meta’s mixed-reality devices. The newly launched Meta AI chatbot will also be accessible to users of Meta’s upcoming smart glasses, which are scheduled for release on October 17, 2023. Users in the United States will have the opportunity to experience this AI-powered assistant along with the new Quest 3 VR device. Powered by the large language model called Llama 2, Meta AI is a result of collaboration between Meta Platforms and Microsoft Bing. This partnership enables users to access real-time information from the internet through the chatbot. Mark Zuckerberg described Meta AI as a "basic assistant that you can talk to like a person".
One of the notable features of the Meta chatbot is its ability to generate images while answering questions and interacting with users. This image generation capability is made possible by a tool called Emu, which leverages data from over 1.1 billion pieces of content shared by users on Facebook and Instagram. Mark Zuckerberg emphasized that Meta’s approach differs from ChatGPT by creating different AI products tailored to specific use cases instead of a one-size-fits-all solution. He provided an example of how Meta AI could assist with organizing travel plans in group chats on Facebook Messenger. The goal of Meta’s chatbots is not only to provide helpful information but also to engage users in conversational and entertaining interactions. During the Meta Connect event, Meta also showcased its entertainment-focused AI products and announced upcoming releases.
