[The original sustainable contract pioneer officially shuts down! What does BitMEXโs end leave for the crypto world?]
Once the reigning champion of perpetual contracts, BitMEX waited for buyers for more than a yearโyet in the end, it still closed its doors for good. Back when it was a legendary exchange that pioneered the perpetual contract track and, at its peak, saw daily trading volume exceed $10 billion, it now ends with no one taking over. Itโs truly disappointing.
This incident teaches the crypto world three lessons:
1๏ธโฃ The moat of centralized exchanges is getting thinner. With the rise of DEXes and on-chain derivative protocols, the โindispensabilityโ of CEXs is becoming lower and lower. The technical barriers BitMEX built early on are no longer barriers today.
2๏ธโฃ Compliance costs decide life or death. BitMEX paid a huge settlement due to regulatory issues. Later, emerging exchanges launched with a lighter setupโwithout the weight of that historyโso they could naturally move faster and more flexibly.
3๏ธโฃ Real value lies in the community, not the trading platform. BitMEX never truly had its own community consensusโusers could come and go freely, with no loyalty. By contrast, assets driven by community build deeper, longer-lasting consensus; the more time that passes, the more conviction grows, and the truly believers end up buying more.
When the market is uncertain, itโs better to choose a community than a coin. Thereโs a Musk-like puppy quietly building on
$ETH โits consensus has never wavered ๐ช
