  • It uses an automated market maker (AMM) model, which means trades occur through liquidity pools rather than traditional order books.

  • PancakeSwap offers a wide range of products and features such as token swaps, liquidity pools, yield farming, limit orders, NFTs, Web3 games and more.

Introduction

The decentralized finance (DeFi) revolution has redefined the way we trade and invest. Using blockchain technology, DeFi platforms offer greater transparency, autonomy and accessibility to financial services.

In the early years of DeFi protocols, we saw the emergence of numerous platforms and decentralized exchanges (DEXs). Initially, they were focused on the Ethereum blockchain due to its smart contract capabilities. However, we currently have several DeFi platforms on various networks, including BNB Chain, Polygon, Solana, and many others.

As blockchains that support smart contracts, these networks have a growing community of users, developers, and tools for creating powerful decentralized applications (DApps). In this article, we will talk about PancakeSwap, a multichain decentralized exchange.

What is PancakeSwap?

PancakeSwap is a decentralized exchange (DEX) launched in 2020. Initially, the platform was mainly used to swap BEP-20 tokens on the BNB Smart Chain (BSC), but has since expanded to other blockchains.

Currently, PancakeSwap also supports the ERC-20 standard and other token standards. In addition to BSC, you can use PancakeSwap on other blockchains, such as Ethereum, Polygon, Arbitrum, among others.

PancakeSwap broker

The PancakeSwap broker uses an automated market maker (AMM) model. This means that you can trade digital assets on the platform without relying on a centralized broker. There is no order book where you search for matching orders from other users. Instead, users place trades in a liquidity pool.

These pools are filled with funds from other users. They make deposits into the pool and in return receive liquidity provider (LP) tokens. They can use these tokens to recover their holdings, as well as a portion of trading fees. In short, you can trade tokens or add liquidity to earn rewards.

PancakeSwap V3

It is important to note that PancakeSwap V3 was launched in April 2023, offering new features and product updates, including non-fungible liquidity positions, customizable price bands, increased liquidity, and increased trading efficiency.

Let's look at some of the key features of the PancakeSwap broker.

Main features of PancakeSwap

Liquidity Pools

PancakeSwap's liquidity pools play a crucial role in facilitating token swaps. Users can contribute liquidity to these pools and earn LP tokens in return, which not only represent their holdings in the liquidity pool but also grant them rewards in the form of trading fees.

Yield farming allows liquidity providers to earn additional rewards, such as CAKE tokens, by locking their LP tokens in smart contracts. The introduction of Initial Farm Offerings (IFOs) provides users with opportunities to purchase new tokens during limited-time events.

Swaps de tokens e Smart Router

Token swaps on PancakeSwap are simplified with the Smart Router, which intelligently routes transactions through multiple liquidity sources such as PancakeSwap V3, V2, StableSwap, and market makers on BNB Smart Chain and Ethereum.

Users can customize their trades by choosing liquidity sources and adjusting routing preferences. The Smart Router ensures optimized trade execution, finding the best prices across multiple pools.

Limit orders for desired prices

The introduction of limit orders on PancakeSwap gives users more control over their trades. They can set desired prices for buying or selling tokens when the market reaches a specific limit price or better.

Integration with market makers

PancakeSwap's integration with market makers on Ethereum and BNB Smart Chain increases trading efficiency. This means that trades can be automatically routed to market makers, offering better execution prices compared to AMM. This integration aims to provide users with cost-effective trading options and increased liquidity.

Zap functionality

Traditionally, users wanting to provide liquidity to DeFi platforms would have to add a pair of tokens to the liquidity pool. On PancakeSwap, the Zap feature simplifies liquidity provision by allowing users to add or remove liquidity with a single token and a single click.

Users can add liquidity with unbalanced token pairs and Zap automatically rebalances them to a 50/50 ratio. By removing liquidity, Zap allows users to receive just one token from the trading pair, streamlining the process.

Connecting to PancakeSwap

When accessing the PancakeSwap platform, you will see that many features are inaccessible until you connect your wallet. Click Connect Wallet and you will see some options: MetaMask, Trust Wallet, WalletConnect, Binance Chain Wallet and other options.

If you are unsure how to connect your MetaMask to the BSC network, please refer to this guide: Connecting MetaMask to the BNB Smart Chain.

After connecting successfully, you will see your wallet ID in the top right corner.

Adding liquidity

If you have used any AMM before, you know the procedure. To farm CAKE, you first need to add liquidity to the exchange.

1. Under Trade, click Liquidity and then click Add Liquidity.

2. Select the token pair you want to deposit (e.g. BNB and CAKE). Make sure you understand the risks of impermanent loss before adding liquidity to the pool.

3. The platform will automatically select the most popular fee tier.

4. Set your desired price range to provide liquidity. You will not provide liquidity for trades outside the selected range, so a smaller range tends to be safer.

5. Enter your deposit amount and click Add Liquidity when ready.

6. To add liquidity to the pool, you will have to confirm some transactions in your wallet to allow the platform to use your tokens.

Please refer to PancakeSwap's official documentation for more details on adding and removing liquidity.

Farming

You can also stake your LP tokens to receive CAKE or other assets. To do this, in the Farms tab, select the option that corresponds to your LP tokens.

You will need to approve the movement of tokens to allow the contract to withdraw tokens on your behalf. When clicking on Approve Contract, a new window will be displayed requesting confirmation of the transaction and informing the fee amount.

Once the transaction is confirmed, simply select the desired amount to stake and confirm. You can leave and return to the page at any time to check how many CAKE tokens you have obtained – to collect your rewards at any time, click Harvest and confirm the transaction.

Lottery

With your CAKE tokens, you can also participate in the PancakeSwap lottery, which is controlled by a smart contract.

Each lottery ticket costs about $5 in CAKE and will give you a random six-digit combination (e.g. 9-1-3-9-6-2). To win the main prize, the numbers on your ticket must match all the numbers on the winning ticket, in the same position.

What if you don't get all six numbers? Don't worry. You can also win rewards if one or more of your numbers are in the same position as the winning ticket numbers.

Lottery prizes are defined by the amount of CAKE used to purchase tickets plus the unredeemed CAKE balance from previous lottery rounds. There is also a periodic injection of CAKE from PancakeSwap's treasury.

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs)

PancakeSwap also offers a marketplace for non-fungible tokens (NFTs), where you can buy, sell and collect exclusive assets on the BNB Smart Chain.

Games Marketplace

PancakeSwap also has a Web3 game marketplace, which is a game publishing platform offered by PancakeSwap in partnership with third-party game developers. For example, the Pancake Protector game was published by the Mobox team.

Although the platform is open to game developers who wish to publish their projects, games are selected based on certain criteria, such as prior experience, relationship with PancakeSwap elements, roadmap development, and technical support and community support resources. .

Is PancakeSwap safe?

PancakeSwap has been audited by CertiK and is one of the leading platforms in the DeFi sector. Does this mean it is a completely safe platform? Not necessarily. When depositing funds into a smart contract, there are always risks of bugs, even for audited and reputable projects. There is also the risk of financial loss that may occur when placing trades or providing liquidity. Never invest more than you can afford to lose.

Final considerations

Ethereum started the DeFi trend, but initiatives like PancakeSwap suggest this wave of innovation will continue to spread to other blockchains.

PancakeSwap has emerged as a versatile, community-driven platform, solidifying its position as one of the leading projects in the decentralized finance scene.

Whether through AMM, liquidity pools, yield farming, market maker integration, Zap functionality or introducing limit orders, PancakeSwap offers a diverse and easy-to-use DeFi experience.
