Ethereum faces new risks after Kospi plunges 6%
Tom Lee, one of Ethereum’s best-known advocates, expects a difficult period for ETH in the short term. His warning does not call his long-term bullish thesis into question: it refers to a possible contagion effect from the South Korean stock market.
Tom Lee issues a rare warning about Ethereum. He fears a short-term drop in ETH.
The Kospi’s decline is worrying markets. Stock market losses in South Korea could spread to cryptocurrencies.
Margin calls pose a risk. Some investors could be forced to sell their ETH to cover their losses.
Ethereum is already showing signs of weakness. Its decline against bitcoin and ETF outflows are adding to the pressure.
Tom Lee remains optimistic in the long term. Despite his warning, he still believes in Ethereum’s potential.
The Kospi’s decline threatens to spread to cryptocurrencies
The Kospi index fell more than 6% in the October 13 session, under pressure from technology companies and semiconductor manufacturers. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix recorded declines of around 8% or more.
The scale of the move prompted Korea Exchange to activate a sell-side “sidecar.” This mechanism temporarily suspends some automated orders when futures contracts experience an excessive price movement. Kospi 200 futures had fallen more than 5%.
Tom Lee fears these stock market losses will spread to the crypto market. He wrote on X:
This major decline in Korean stocks is likely spreading to cryptocurrencies.
