I couldn’t sleep that night
At three in the morning, I stared at my phone screen, my finger hovering over the Buy button, unable to bring myself to press it.
GTC, Gitcoin—a project I’d been watching for two weeks. Back then, its price was hovering around $0.15, trading volume was low, and hardly anyone on the feed was talking about it. I added it to my watchlist and checked on it every day, but never made a move.
“Let’s wait a little longer,” I told myself. “Maybe it’ll drop some more.”
And it did. From $0.15, it fell to $0.13, then to $0.11. The chatter on the feed turned into “This coin is done” and “The team’s probably run off with the money.” I was glad I hadn’t bought in, and even secretly laughed at the people who were buying the dip.
Then today, everything changed.
At two in the afternoon, I was in a meeting when my phone buzzed. I glanced down. GTC was up 15%. I didn’t think much of it, assuming it was just a normal fluctuation.
When I got home that evening, I opened Binance again and nearly threw my phone across the room. GTC’s price had shot up like a rocket, going straight from $0.15 to $0.39—a gain of more than 160%. On my watchlist, that little gray icon had turned an eye-watering green.
I shakily did the math. If I’d put in 5,000 yuan when it was at $0.15 two weeks ago, it would be worth 13,000 yuan now. If I’d put in 50,000, I’d have 130,000.
And me? I hadn’t bought a single cent’s worth.
I frantically scrolled through posts on the feed. Some people were saying, “I told you GTC was about to explode,” while others said, “I went all in at $0.18.” Every comment felt like a knife twisting in my heart.
What made it even harder to bear was that GTC kept climbing. I watched helplessly as it pulled back from $0.39 to $0.30, still twice as high as when I’d first started watching it. I tried to buy in at the higher price, but my finger was shaking. What if I bought at the top? What if it was a bull trap?
In the end, I did nothing. I turned off my phone, lay down in bed, and stared at the ceiling.
The sky outside was starting to brighten. I thought back to the night two weeks ago when I first came across GTC. It had been another sleepless night, just like this one. Back then, I was wondering whether to buy. Now, I was regretting not buying.
The cruelest thing about the cryptocurrency market isn’t getting liquidated or watching a coin go to zero. It’s seeing an opportunity right in front of you, then watching it slip through your fingers because you hesitated and got scared.
I rolled over, opened my phone, and saved a screenshot of GTC’s price.
Not as a keepsake, but as a reminder to myself: next time an opportunity comes along, don’t wait.
