Claims at 206K against 204K prior isn't cooling. It's rounding error. The signal is that claims WON'T move — 4-week average at 207K, continuing claims creeping, nothing breaking. Firms have stopped hiring, but they refuse to fire. ADP at 38K and claims at 206K are the same economy seen from both sides: low-hire, low-fire, frozen.
That freeze is exactly why the hike survived a week of soft labor data. A Fed worried about inflation looks at claims and sees zero stress. The labor argument that stops this committee needs firing, not slow hiring — and firing shows up here first, in this weekly series, before any payroll print.
