Last night, at midnight, I pored over the details of the Zedger protocol in Section 4.2 of the @Dusk whitepaper. When I saw those lines of formulas combining “deterministic deterministic lotteries with blind bidding (Proof-of-Blind Bid),” I kept underlining and scrutinizing them until 2 a.m. This part is really interesting. Everyone’s talking about the privacy Layer1, and all eyes are on how zero-knowledge proofs (ZKPs) conceal transfers—thinking that as long as the mechanism is opaque enough, it’s the “holy grail of compliant institutions.”
But the industry-recognized blind spot is exactly here: pure privacy is the natural enemy of compliance. What Dusk has done with Zedger is actually a “dual-layer structure with a back door.”
Let’s use a life analogy: it’s like you enter a high-end private club. In your private room, who you drink with and how much money you spent (the Phoenix state) are completely secret to the outside world; but the moment asset compliance settlement (the Zedger state) is involved, the manager actually holds an audit master key with a View Key. This isn’t absolute privacy in an anti-governmentist sense—it’s a “designated back room that allows regulatory spot checks.”
This is where we must talk about the essential role of the DUSK token. It is not only the gas fuel for concealing computation, but also the staking collateral for proof of stake. Yet the built-in incentive bias here is extremely deep: when whales stake large amounts of DUSK to become Provisioner nodes and obtain a higher probability of voting rights in the consensus committee, they are effectively using token weight to manipulate and shape the boundary rules of those “compliance audits.” In the end, whales can earn gas dividends and, by reversing through governance power, further amplify their voting advantage—forming a classic case of economic capture.
My stance is very clear: Dusk’s design in the underlying ZKVM that blends compliance and privacy is indeed ingenious, and it hits the urgent need of RWA institutions entering the space. But don’t let the narrative of “decentralized privacy” blind you. At its core, it’s a highly compliance-oriented intermediary for financial giants—wrapped in cryptographic packaging.
When real institutional giants come with billions in capital, stake DUSK, and control the consensus layer— is this truly a victory for Web3, or just another continuation of traditional finance wearing a new shell? Share your thoughts in the comments.
