A report from the Cornell Brooks Tech Policy Institute (BTPI) says that if the U.S. exempts capital gains tax for Bitcoin and crypto transactions under $300, federal net income over 10 years could increase by $859M.

The estimated range is pretty wild:
Low scenario: +$172M Base scenario: +$859M High scenario: +$2.58B It assumes about 5.4 million people continue using crypto for payments.

The reason is that current taxes and reporting procedures make using BTC for small payments quite a hassle. Exempting transactions under $300 could encourage crypto use, thereby expanding taxable economic activity elsewhere.

Notably, Senator Cynthia Lummis’s proposed S.2207 would also raise the capital gains tax exemption to up to $5,000 per year for eligible transactions.

🇺🇸🇮🇷 Iran keeps threatening to close off part of Hormuz, and a senior U.S. official says the Navy already controls the whole thing.

The strait is fully open, according to the official, and shipping traffic is expected to climb from here.

The reason is a covert mine-clearing operation that's been going since April. Navy special operations teams pulled out an estimated 80 naval mines, which was reported earlier this year.

Washington says it's satisfied with the flows, around 9 million barrels a day by Energy Secretary Chris Wright's count.

The same official called the naval blockade on Iran "the most successful in history" and said sanctions plus the blockade have "completely" wrecked the Iranian economy. Roughly 20 vessels are still escorting commercial ships through.

That’s Washington’s version of events. Tehran obviously sees Hormuz very differently.
