Browsing TechCrunch: Napster co-founder Sean Parker is back in the music world—this time with Stability AI, and with record labels already negotiated and ready to go.
Together with CEO Prem Akkaraju, they’ve steered this image-model company—nearly flipped over—toward “AI tools for professional musicians.” By the end of August, it had just raised about $76 million, with Sony, Warner, and Universal involved, plus licensing the catalog for training. It then released three audio models and an AI music-arranging software—so with text prompts, you can generate a full backing track or short clips.
Parker says the next step is to support humming a melody, or using your mouth to provide drum beats to direct the generation.
From the Napster days of doing things first and getting permission later, to now securing licenses before releasing models—the shift in approach is pretty straightforward. The image space has been saturated; now this line is starting to squeeze into studios.
