In-Depth Analysis of the Ethereum Market: Multiple Headwinds Converge—Can the Oversold Bounce Last?
I. Price Trend Analysis
As of the early hours of October 8 Beijing time, the spot price of Ethereum stood at $2,566, down about 4.8% over the past 24 hours—a much steeper decline than Bitcoin. The intraday low was $2,538, extending the recent weakening trend. Three key factors drove this sharp drop.
First, U.S. spot Ethereum ETFs recorded net outflows for six consecutive trading days, with cumulative outflows reaching $202 million, all from BlackRock’s ETHA fund. The sustained institutional withdrawals have dealt a serious blow to market confidence, while institutional short exposure has climbed to a high of $1.58 billion.
Second, the Layer 2 ecosystem has suffered a major setback. Abstract announced that it will shut down on December 15, while projects such as Blast are also facing operational difficulties. The contraction of these Layer 2 networks directly threatens Ethereum’s fee-burning mechanism and ecosystem activity.
Third, whale addresses have continued depositing large amounts of Ethereum into major exchanges. Combined with net outflows of as much as $113.9 million from the spot market, this has created clear selling pressure. The price plunged from $2,696 to $2,551 before showing signs of stabilizing.
In terms of the candlestick chart, Ethereum staged a modest rebound after touching a low of $2,538 and is now fluctuating around $2,570. Short-term support lies near $2,520, while resistance above is around $2,610.
II. Technical Indicator Analysis
Hourly technical indicators show that although Ethereum has recovered somewhat from its deeply oversold territory, its overall technical picture remains markedly weaker than Bitcoin’s.
For the RSI, the 6-period RSI rebounded from an extremely oversold reading of 13.23 to 47.71. This is a substantial recovery, but it has yet to break above the 50 midpoint. The 12-period RSI is 34.25 and the 24-period RSI is 31.91, both in weak territory. This indicates that although the most extreme selling pressure has eased, buying strength remains insufficient.
The MACD shows slight signs of improvement. The MACD line rose from -33.41 to -29.03, with the signal line also improving, while the histogram turned positive at 1.58. Although the histogram has moved into positive territory, its absolute value is small and the rebound is limited. It will need to expand further to confirm a trend reversal.
The moving averages are aligned in a clear bearish formation. The 7-period moving average is at $2,566, in line with the current price. The 25-period moving average at $2,612 and the 99-period moving average at $2,682 are both above the price, creating successive layers of resistance. The price is well below all major moving averages, confirming a clear downtrend.
The KDJ indicator has rebounded rapidly from oversold territory. The K value rose to 54.31, the D value is 37.58, and the J value reached 87.78. The three lines have formed a bullish crossover and are spreading upward, suggesting the potential for a short-term technical rebound. However, the J value is approaching overbought territory, so the risk of a pullback after the rebound should be watched.
For the Bollinger Bands, the upper band is at $2,644, the middle band at $2,591, and the lower band at $2,538. The price has rebounded from the lower band to near the middle band, while the band width continues to narrow, suggesting that a directional move may be imminent.
A composite factor analysis shows that only 5 of 15 factors are bullish, while 10 are bearish, giving bears a clear advantage. The composite indicator stands at -0.49, signaling a bearish outlook. Its historical win rate is as high as 84.62%, indicating relatively strong reliability for the bearish signal.
III. Market Sentiment Analysis
Market sentiment toward Ethereum is currently clearly bearish, with multiple negative factors combining to cloud the short-term outlook.
From a capital-flow perspective, sustained large ETF outflows are the most direct bearish signal. In stark contrast to the $1.19 billion in net inflows recorded by Bitcoin ETFs over the same period, the $602 million in outflows from Ethereum ETFs reflects an accelerating withdrawal of institutional capital from the Ethereum market. This structural outflow is unlikely to reverse in the short term.
From an ecosystem perspective, the successive shutdowns of Layer 2 networks have exposed the challenge of making Ethereum’s scaling solutions sustainable. When Layer 2 networks cannot achieve a healthy economic model, this not only affects the burning of transaction fees but also weakens the growth narrative of the entire Ethereum ecosystem. This undermines the confidence of medium- and long-term holders.
Technically, although the RSI and KDJ indicators clearly point to a short-term rebound from oversold conditions, the MACD histogram’s move into positive territory is slight and the moving averages are all bearishly aligned, potentially limiting the rebound. If the price fails to break decisively above the $2,610 resistance level, it may form a lower high, further confirming the downtrend.
In the short term, Ethereum has some support in the $2,520–$2,540 region, while resistance is strong in the $2,610–$2,650 region. Until the ETF outflow trend reverses and the negative news surrounding the Layer 2 ecosystem has been fully absorbed, the sustainability of the rebound remains uncertain. Investors are advised to remain cautious and monitor whether support at $2,520 holds.
