How to Read EMA So You Don’t Enter a Position Wrong! Beginners Need to Know
A lot of people use EMA but are still confused. Even though it’s one of the most reliable indicators for reading trends. Here’s how to read it:
1. What Is EMA?
EMA = Exponential Moving Average. It’s an average of prices that’s more sensitive than a regular MA, so it gives signals faster.
Most popular settings: EMA 20, 50, 100, 200
2. How to Read the Trend by Looking Only at Price Position
- Price ABOVE EMA 20, 50, and 200 = STRONG UPTREND; focus on looking for BUY opportunities
- Price BELOW EMA 20, 50, and 200 = STRONG DOWNTREND; focus on looking for SELL opportunities / don’t go Long
- Price moving back and forth around the EMA = SIDEWAYS; don’t force a trade
Example from the ARK chart you sent earlier: The price is now at 0.2115, above the EMA (if enabled)—a sign that the long downtrend is over.
3. The Golden Cross & Death Cross Strategy
- Golden Cross: EMA 20 crosses EMA 50 or 200 from BELOW to ABOVE = Strong BUY signal.
- Death Cross: EMA 20 crosses EMA 50 or 200 from ABOVE to BELOW = Strong SELL signal.
4. EMA as Dynamic Support and Resistance
In an uptrend, the price often bounces off EMA 20 or EMA 50 before continuing upward. That’s the best entry area—not when the price is at its peak.
In a downtrend, EMA 20/50 act as resistance for Short entries on a bounce.
5. Beginner Mistakes
- Using just one EMA. Use at least two (fast and slow), for example, EMA 20 + EMA 50.
- Entering while the EMAs are still crossing back and forth closely. Wait until they spread apart (a clear trend).
- Not using a Stop Loss. EMA isn’t infallible; it can still give false signals in a sideways market.
My favorite setup:
TF 1H & 4H: EMA 20, 50, 200
Buy = Price > EMA 20 > EMA 50 > EMA 200
Sell = Price < EMA 20 < EMA 50 < EMA 200
Check your favorite coin now—is it above or below the EMA?
