Uniswap has unveiled its vision for Uniswap v4, a highly anticipated update that promises to revolutionize decentralized finance (DeFi) and reshape the future of liquidity provision and token trading on the blockchain.
With the release of Uniswap v3 two years ago, the protocol achieved a significant milestone in on-chain liquidity and DeFi. Today, Uniswap stands as the largest decentralized exchange protocol, facilitating an impressive $1.5 trillion in trading volume. Its crucial role as public infrastructure within the crypto ecosystem cannot be understated.
Recognizing the need to adapt to evolving technology and markets, Uniswap is excited to introduce Uniswap v4, which it believes will unlock a multitude of possibilities for liquidity creation and token trading on the blockchain. In an effort to encourage community involvement and foster open feedback, Uniswap has released the draft code for v4, inviting meaningful contributions from the community. This process is expected to span several months.
Uniswap v3 introduced a powerful and opinionated approach to liquidity provision, striking a delicate balance in a complex tradeoff space. However, new features often come with higher fees and increased code complexity. Uniswap v4 aims to democratize these tradeoff decisions by introducing “hooks,” which are contracts that run at various points during a pool’s lifecycle. This allows pools to make similar tradeoffs as v3 or add entirely new functionalities. For instance, v4 enables pools to support dynamic fees, incorporate on-chain limit orders, or act as time-weighted average market makers (TWAMM) to execute large orders gradually over time.
In addition to enhanced customization, Uniswap v4 boasts an architecture that reduces costs and ensures efficiency. It introduces a new “singleton” contract, consolidating all pools within a single smart contract. This combination of hooks and singleton architecture creates a powerful platform that offers fast and secure pool customization and efficient routing across multiple pools. Uniswap v4 brings rapid and expressive automated market maker (AMM) innovation to a unified ecosystem.
The introduction of hooks and custom pools is a significant aspect of Uniswap v4. Each liquidity pool has a lifecycle involving various events such as pool creation, liquidity adjustment, and token swapping. By leveraging hooks, developers can customize how these pools, swaps, fees, and LP (liquidity provider) positions interact, paving the way for innovative applications. Uniswap v4 encourages experimentation, and developers can create customized AMM pools by integrating their own hook smart contracts.
Uniswap v4’s improved architecture and gas-saving mechanisms address some of the inefficiencies present in v3. Unlike v3, which deploys a new contract for every pool, v4 consolidates all pools within a singleton contract. This change leads to substantial gas savings, as tokens no longer need to be transferred between multiple contracts during swaps.
Early estimates suggest that v4 reduces gas costs for pool creation by an impressive 99%. Additionally, Uniswap v4 introduces a “flash accounting” system that transfers assets only on net balances, further enhancing efficiency and reducing gas consumption.
The singleton architecture is complemented by a proposed “transient storage” concept enabled by EIP-1153, which could deliver even greater gas improvements and cleaner contract designs across various applications. Uniswap v4 also reintroduces support for native ETH, providing additional gas savings.

In terms of licensing and governance, Uniswap adheres to its principles of openness, transparency, and community governance. Uniswap v4’s code will be released under the Business Source License 1.1, restricting commercial or production use for up to four years. After this period, it will convert to a GPL license, ensuring perpetual openness. Exceptions to the license can be granted by Uniswap Governance and Uniswap Labs, as seen with v3. The fee mechanism of the protocol will also mirror that of v3, allowing governance to vote on implementing a Protocol fee for any pool, up to a specified limit.
