Mercado Bitcoin, one of Brazil’s largest crypto exchanges, suffered a hack last week, temporarily freezing deposits and withdrawals. The platform reportedly plans to reopen on November 9 in “view-only” mode and has promised to compensate users for their losses. Meanwhile, Tether, the issuer of $USDT, froze around 4.5 million related USDT.

This incident is a reminder of two things: first, stablecoins’ ability to be frozen can indeed be useful when recovering stolen funds; second, exchange risks are always present. Diversifying your assets, holding your own private keys, or at least not keeping most of your assets in one place is basic practice. The exact amount stolen has not yet been officially confirmed, so don’t be swayed by secondhand figures.
