A large amount of the hardware (especially HDDs + related SSDs/caches) used by storage providers (SPs/miners) on the Filecoin network was deployed before this round of NAND price surges.

SanDisk is requiring customers to pay 100% cash upfront for three-year NAND supply contracts, calling the terms unprecedented as NAND prices continue to surge sharply with no signs of easing.
Filecoin storage is running on hardware deployed before those price increases.
Around January 2026, supply chain reports (mainly from Taiwanese media such as Digitimes) clearly indicated that SanDisk had proposed unprecedented long-term supply contract terms to some downstream customers: requiring them to pay 100% cash upfront to secure NAND supply allocations for the next one to three years. The industry widely regarded these terms as extremely stringent and a break from convention. The main reason was the explosive growth in demand from AI servers and data centers, along with production capacity being shifted toward higher-margin products, which kept enterprise NAND supplies tight and prices surging sharply. At the time, manufacturers expected this supply-demand imbalance to persist at least through the end of 2026, if not longer.
