South Korean cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb has provided another update on a security incident: information belonging to 6,444 users was leaked. The data of 5,600 of them was encrypted, however, so information that could actually be read involved 844 people.

📢 In an announcement published on October 29, Bithumb said that on October 27, unauthorized external parties accessed the company’s internal mobile office system, Daou Office, resulting in the leak of some personal information.

The information involved included names, phone numbers, email addresses, and some sensitive identity and financial details. Information belonging to another 715 employees and partner personnel was also affected.

⚠️ Are users’ crypto assets safe?

Bithumb said the system that was breached was an internal office system, separate from the exchange’s account and asset information systems. So far, no direct breach of the trading system or customer database has been detected.

The company has blocked the unauthorized access, disabled the affected systems, and reported the incident to the relevant South Korean regulators. It has also stepped up monitoring for suspicious transactions and withdrawals.

However, the data leak could still lead to further risks. Even if attackers did not gain direct access to users’ assets, they could use real names, phone numbers, or email addresses to impersonate platform customer support and send phishing messages, tricking users into clicking links or revealing verification codes.

📌 This incident is a reminder: the fact that the exchange has found no breach of its asset systems does not mean users can let their guard down.

If you recently receive a text, email, or direct message claiming to be from Bithumb—especially one asking you to log in, transfer funds, provide a verification code, or share your recovery phrase—be sure to verify it through official channels. Don’t click suspicious links, and never share your wallet recovery phrase or private key with anyone.

In the crypto market, asset security means more than preventing hackers from directly stealing coins; protecting personal information is just as important. When a security incident occurs, verify the announcement and secure your account before taking action in a panic.
