SpaceX reportedly in talks to lease ≥80,000 cell sites; AT&T fell nearly 8% Friday, tower stocks rose 9%, and SPCX remains below MA20—I’m not chasing
What I saw: Bloomberg reported that SpaceX is in talks with tower companies, including Crown Castle International, to secure at least 80,000 U.S. cell-site locations—roughly half of the country’s dedicated tower sites—as it looks to build a fourth nationwide wireless network.
AT&T closed Friday at 20.93, down 7.96%; T-Mobile fell 7.71%, while Crown Castle International rose 9.06%. SPCX bounced just 1.89% to close at 147.49, still below MA20 at around 155, and down roughly 35% from its June high of 225.64.
No agreement has been signed, and Bernstein says the competitive impact could still be years away.
My take: This is an expectations trade, not a finalized contract. Carriers got hit while tower stocks rallied. In the short term, don’t treat a rumor as a sure-fire positive catalyst and chase SPCX.
What I’m doing: Not chasing. I’ll take another look if it gets back above MA20 around 155 on the daily chart. A break below the October 22 low of 143.21 would signal a failed rebound.
Would you chase SPCX on this unfinalized cell-site rumor, or wait for it to get back above the moving average?
