SpaceX announced that it would acquire nationwide 800 MHz spectrum licenses held by private equity firm Grain Management for approximately $8 billion in cash. That same week, the FCC approved the Starlink Mobile Gen2 constellation plan—up to 15,000 satellites, optimized specifically for the 2 GHz band.
Taken together, these two developments mean SpaceX has secured both “high-band” spectrum (satellites, 2 GHz, high bandwidth) and “low-band” spectrum (800 MHz, strong building penetration and broad coverage). Most existing phones already support 800 MHz, so users can connect without upgrading their devices.
But there’s a technical reality: satellites alone can’t provide sufficient coverage indoors in cities or in densely populated areas. SpaceX’s own FCC filing makes this clear—it plans to install ground-based radio equipment at cell sites, on rooftops, and at other locations.
Bernstein analysts estimate that if SpaceX wants to build a nationwide terrestrial mobile network, it would need 30,000 to 120,000 sites, depending on the scale of coverage, at an investment of $50 billion to $130 billion. The U.S. builds just 1,200 to 2,000 new cell sites a year—far too slowly to meet that need. SpaceX will likely have to lease a large number of existing towers from Crown Castle, American Tower, and SBA Communications.
After the news broke, Crown Castle rose 13% in a single day, American Tower gained 7%, and SBA was up 6%. These three companies had previously been most worried about Starlink bypassing terrestrial cell sites to connect directly to phones. Now they could become its biggest potential landlords.
What this means for $SPCX: this strategy takes SpaceX from a “satellite broadband company” toward becoming a “full-stack mobile operator,” putting it in direct competition with AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. The latter three fell more than 6% in a single day. But this transition will require enormous capital, and SpaceX already has $38.4 billion in debt.
Whether it can really break into the market will depend on how quickly it can build out its terrestrial network.
Do you think SpaceX will become America’s fourth-largest mobile operator?
