⚡ Solana’s TPS is about to drop sharply. This isn’t a bug.
Alpenglow is scheduled to activate today (at epoch 1064). It will replace TowerBFT with a new voting protocol called Votor.
What’s changing:
• Finality target: ~12.8 s → ~150 ms
• Validator votes move off-chain
• The SVM, transaction format, and fees remain unchanged
What you’ll probably see: about three-quarters of Solana transactions are validator votes. Once they leave the ledger, the reported TPS and transaction count should drop, even if actual user activity doesn’t change. This is an accounting change, not a slowdown.
What isn’t guaranteed:
• 150 ms is a design target that has not yet been demonstrated under peak mainnet load
• Rotor (the block propagation upgrade) is not part of this activation
• The Byzantine fault tolerance threshold drops from 1/3 to 1/5 of stake
After the change, monitor: validator participation, finalized block latency, and skipped slots.
