Yesterday, news reported by Al-Arabiya that Qatar and Pakistan had proposed a compromise plan for U.S.-Iran talks sparked a sharp short-term rally in BTC. However, diplomats involved in the negotiations later publicly denied the reports, saying an agreement was nowhere near being reached. BTC gave back nearly all of its gains and remains range-bound, with no clear direction emerging.

The move directly reflects how sensitive market risk appetite is to macroeconomic risks. If the U.S. and Iran ultimately reach an agreement, pressure on global energy supplies would ease significantly. A decline in crude oil and other commodity prices would directly reduce inflationary pressures and, in turn, ease pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates—providing a short-term boost to risk assets such as BTC. The market remains somewhat optimistic, partly because of a spate of positive reports related to the U.S. and Iran, and partly because, with the U.S. midterm elections approaching, there is also political incentive to make progress in the negotiations. This was the key reason yesterday’s news drove BTC higher in the short term.

However, there is still considerable uncertainty over whether an agreement will be reached. Diplomats’ denials have already made clear that the two sides remain far apart on their core demands. Even if an agreement is reached later, it remains uncertain whether the extent and pace of any decline in inflation would be enough for the Fed to quickly shift toward easing. With other sources of uncertainty still present in the global macro environment, BTC has not broken out on the back of a single news item; instead, it quickly retreated after the reports were debunked. This shows that the market is still pricing risk assets very cautiously. Until there is clear, confirmed positive news, investors are unlikely to commit to a particular direction.

For traders, there is no need to let a single piece of geopolitical news dictate short-term decisions. Focus instead on two key variables: first, official statements on U.S.-Iran negotiations to assess the actual likelihood of an agreement being reached; and second, upcoming U.S. CPI data and changes in the Fed’s messaging at its policy meetings, to confirm the inflation trend and the path of monetary policy. Signals from these two variables are what matter most for BTC’s medium-term direction. Volatility driven by short-term news is largely sentiment-driven and offers no lasting trading guidance. Don’t impulsively chase a rapid short-term rally, and don’t become overly pessimistic after a news report is debunked—avoid letting sentiment throw off your trading rhythm.
