$ZAMA Funding rate turns negative; short sellers start paying

Market cap is only $263.9M, yet 24-hour trading volume hit $19.1M. The market isn’t big, but the bets sure are.

Open interest looks like someone’s been piling in: 8.9M → 9.8M → 10.1M → 9.9M. It pulled back a notch at the end, but nobody really left. Price is 0.0745, still up +0.7% over 24h, while OI has jumped +12.4%.

Did it fall? Not much. Positions are growing, and growing with conviction.

The funding rate tells the story more plainly: +0.0002% flipped to -0.0017%. In plain English, shorts are gaining the upper hand, but now they have to pay to keep their positions open. The direction may look right, but the daily bill doesn’t. The longer shorts hold, the heavier the cost.

Those shorts paying negative funding are also fuel that could easily get squeezed at these low price levels. No rebound is guaranteed; rising costs are.

Keep an eye on 10.1M. If it can’t hold, someone is leaving first; if it holds, someone is still hanging on.

Risk warning: Negative funding isn’t a seat belt. Add leverage, and a squeeze will often take out the largest positions first.
