Today’s market is kind of interesting.
BTC is still recovering from its earlier losses, and many other coins are merely catching their breath. NEAR, though, briefly surged to $5.42, up nearly 10% in 24 hours. At times like this, the easiest conclusion to jump to is: the AI narrative is back, and an altcoin rally is on the way.
I don’t think we can jump to that conclusion so quickly.
NEAR’s rally this time isn’t entirely without fundamental support. On September 29, the Bitwise NEAR ETF officially began trading on NYSE Arca under the ticker NRR. Earlier, NEAR Intents had already brought cross-chain trading, unified liquidity, and AI agent payments together under one narrative. In its ETF launch announcement, Bitwise said that Intents had processed more than $32 billion in volume. The fee distribution mechanism disclosed by NEAR also begins to link product usage with demand for the NEAR token.
These developments mean NEAR is no longer just a “bounce by an old blockchain” story. ETFs provide an entry point for traditional capital, Intents aims to offer real-world use cases, and AI gives the market room to imagine what’s possible. With all three coming together, it’s hardly surprising that investors are willing to revalue it.
But today’s rally can’t be attributed entirely to fundamentals.
NEAR is currently around $5.20, with an intraday range of $4.54 to $5.42. A high-to-low swing of nearly 20% in less than a day shows that investor sentiment is far more divided than a single green candle might suggest. Meanwhile, BTC has also rebounded from around $80,000, and altcoins such as INJ, which had previously fallen sharply, have rallied in tandem. This looks more like a combination of recovering risk appetite, short covering, and catalysts specific to NEAR than a single piece of news suddenly changing its long-term value.
What’s really worth watching next isn’t whether NEAR can rally again, but whether buyers step in after the rise.
If trading volume doesn’t quickly dry up when the price pulls back, and ETF inflows and on-chain activity continue to grow, then this rally may be pricing in a fundamental shift ahead of time. Conversely, if excitement is high but the price can’t hold above $5, the so-called AI narrative may just be a more appealing excuse for short-term traders.
So I’m not rushing to call this a trend reversal, nor am I simply writing it off as a bull trap.
The market has put the question on the table: NEAR has a new story and a new entry point for capital. What remains to be proven is whether these stories can translate into sustained demand, rather than just a one-day price move.
