📚 On-Chain Classroom ④ | The $770 Million Liquidation Night: How Does a Leverage Cascade Happen?

Yesterday, BTC swung sharply between $81,000 and $84,000. More than $770 million was liquidated in 24 hours, including as much as $686 million in long positions (nearly 90% of the total). In this lesson, let’s break down exactly how a “cascade” happens.

1️⃣ Why were long positions liquidated?
When the price falls below a key level, highly leveraged long positions are forcibly closed, and exchanges sell them at market price. That pushes the price even lower, triggering liquidations of the next batch of longs—and so on. This is called a “long squeeze.” It’s not just one person selling; it’s a chain reaction of forced selling.

2️⃣ Leverage multiple ≈ speed of death
With 10x leverage, a 10% move against you can liquidate your position; with 20x leverage, a 5% move is enough to wipe you out. Yesterday’s 4% swing in a single day may not seem like much, but for a 20x long, it was a matter of life or death. Leverage doesn’t increase the “certainty” of your returns—it only speeds up the path to zero.

3️⃣ A three-step checklist to stay in the game
① Keep leverage below 3–5x to leave room for error;
② Always limit your position to a small portion of your total capital, and keep the risk on any single trade under 5%;
③ A stop-loss isn’t admitting defeat—it’s insurance. Set your stop-loss before placing an order, then think about your target.

Many newcomers think liquidation is just “bad luck,” but really, they lost at “risk pricing.” Every sharp market swing is a tuition bill sent to retail traders.
