Sui has taken its first step into the era of quantum computers 🔐

Quantum computers can’t crack cryptocurrencies yet, but public keys remain on the blockchain forever. All an attacker has to do is collect them now and wait for the right hardware. That’s why Mysten Labs, the team behind Sui, decided not to wait.

Chief Cryptographer Kostas Chalkias announced that the first transaction using a post-quantum ML-DSA-65 signature was completed on Devnet (version v1.82.0, released on October 12). It’s a NIST standard designed to withstand the quantum era.

Here’s a nice detail: you can switch to new keys using your existing seed phrase. Your address and assets stay put, so there’s no need to transfer anything.

The plan:

quantum-safe storage on mainnet by the end of 2026;
ML-DSA-65 accounts on Testnet by the end of the year;
built-in protection on mainnet in the first quarter of 2027, if the audits don’t turn up any surprises.

For now, all of this is only on Devnet, so there’s no need to change wallets. But it’s a serious move toward the future 🚀
