Multi-chain stock dividends: When shares are moving across chains, who gets the dividend?
When a tokenized share moves from Chain A to Chain B right at the dividend record-date cutoff, the key question is where that entitlement is recorded. Simply adding up balances across chains does not explain how shares in transit are attributed.
In the Swift hackathon proposal announced by Chainlink on October 1, CRE coordinates holdings snapshots across networks, combines them into a unified register, and defines rules for attributing shares moving across chains at the cutoff. Only then are entitlements calculated, payments made, and reconciliation completed. This describes the proposal’s design; it does not mean that all tokenized stocks have adopted this approach.
My research focuses on the need for cross-chain asset dividend disclosures to make the snapshot time, network finality conditions, and treatment of shares in transit public. The ability to transfer an asset is a different acceptance criterion from whether its dividend entitlement can be accurately recorded at the cutoff.
The proposal also suggests extending snapshot and on-chain payment fields in financial messages. The proposal itself does not prove that the industry has adopted these fields uniformly.
