Damn, who would’ve thought that one of Bitcoin’s biggest security risks is a little habit many people have had for over a decade. 😂

According to Glassnode data, around 4.33 million BTC $BTC have exposed public keys due to address reuse, accounting for roughly 21.5% of the circulating supply—up 14.2% from a year ago.

At a Bitcoin price of $80,000, the assets involved are worth more than $340 billion.

Many people may not know that the public key behind a Bitcoin address isn’t directly exposed for certain address types. But once you send BTC from that address, the public key is usually exposed on the blockchain.

If you keep reusing that address afterward, it’s like giving up an extra layer of protection.

Even more staggering, if you include other address types whose public keys are exposed by default, the amount of BTC involved could reach 6.26 million.

What’s truly worrying isn’t the present, but future quantum computing.

If quantum computers become powerful enough to crack Bitcoin’s current elliptic-curve signature algorithm, addresses with exposed public keys could be among the first at risk.

But this really is a wake-up call for everyone holding Bitcoin: don’t assume your coins are completely safe just because you leave them sitting in a wallet.

People used to worry about exchanges collapsing, wallets getting hacked, and seed phrases getting lost.

Well, now even future quantum computers might have their sights set on your Bitcoin. 😭
