Conclusion first: this round of ORCA looks more like a rapid cooldown after switching hands at a high level, rather than a selloff that has already finished bottoming out. Spot and perpetuals are weakening in sync. Daily trading value has surged significantly, but the contract notional open interest value has decreased by 26.39% over roughly 30 hours. A negative funding rate only indicates that one side of shorts is more crowded; it cannot, by itself, serve as a reversal signal. In the near term, watch whether the $2.268–$2.291 area can be held by the already-closed candlesticks. If it rebounds, it should first reclaim $2.476; then observe the resistance around $2.683.
1. Current price and market commentary
As of 02:08 Beijing time on October 9, 2026, Binance spot ORCAUSDT is at about $2.273, down 21.89% in the past 24 hours; the high-low range is $3.082–$2.268. USDⓈ-M ORCAUSDT is at about $2.270, down 21.37% in the past 24 hours. Both have declines that are quite close; we have yet to see any clear spot-stronger-than-perpetual repair signal.
The “trading value” here is the交易 amount returned by the Binance API, not net capital inflow; the OI below is whole-market futures contract statistics and does not represent any individual account’s positions.
II. Why this is considered the de-leveraging stage after a selloff with increased volume
1. The closed daily candle (as of 23:59 on October 8) closed at $2.855. The single-candle trading value was about $30.298 million, which is 6.74 times the previous 20 closed daily candles’ average of about $4.494 million. The daily low has already been pushed down to $2.683, indicating that the sell pressure was not only happening within this current hour.
2. The most recently closed 4-hour candlesticks (as of 19:59 on October 8) fell from $2.613 to $2.476, with trading value of about $1.751 million, only 0.38 times the average of the previous 20. The most recently closed 1-hour candlestick closed at $2.291, with trading value of about $632,000, roughly 1.01 times the previous 20-candle average. In other words, in the current short cycle there is no further occurrence of volume expansion at the same level; whether the rebound has enough follow-through still needs to be observed.
3. Binance’s publicly available 1-hour OI history shows that in about 30 hours, the contract count dropped from 4.831 million to 4.235 million, a decrease of 12.34%. Measured by the API’s nominal value, it fell from about $13.145 million to $9.677 million, a decrease of 26.39%. While the price is falling, the nominal leverage also contracts; this is closer to re-pricing after long liquidations, forced liquidations, or主动 de-risking. It cannot be simply understood as “shorts adding positions and squeezing soon.”
III. How to interpret the funding rate
The current mark price is about $2.270, the index price is about $2.272, and the latest unsettled funding rate is about -0.0209% per 4 hours. The most recently settled funding rate was about -0.0569% per 4 hours, and the past few readings have also remained negative. A negative funding rate means that shorts in perpetual futures are relatively crowded. However, since neither the price nor the OI nominal value has stabilized yet, it is neither a reason to buy nor proof that a bottom has already formed. If prices continue making new lows while the funding rate remains negative, prioritize guarding against a fast mean-reversion driven by short overcrowding. If the funding rate turns positive but the price still cannot reclaim key levels, it is more like a weak rebound with limited follow-through.
IV. Which levels to watch next
- $2.268—$2.291: the current 24-hour low and near the close of the most recently closed 1-hour candle. If there is a valid 1-hour or 4-hour close below it and trading value expands again, weakness may continue; if it is only a wick intraday that is then reclaimed, it is only worth watching for a short-term stop in selling pressure.
- $2.476: the close of the most recently closed 4-hour period. Only if price reclaims and holds above it can it indicate that the first round of selling pressure has been repaired. Before it is reclaimed, treat any rebound primarily as a weak corrective bounce.
- $2.683: near the low of the most recently closed daily candle, and also the first resistance level on a higher timeframe. Only after reclaiming it is it worth discussing whether the daily structure has shifted from one-way decline to range-bound repair.
V. Two scenarios and invalidation conditions
Bearish scenario: If the $2.268—$2.291 area is confirmed as broken by closed candles, and at the same time the 1-hour trading value is clearly above the average again, it suggests selling pressure has regrouped. Do not preemptively buy the dip just because the funding rate is negative.
Rebound/repair scenario: If price first holds around $2.268, then closes back above $2.476, and OI does not continue rapidly contracting while short-term trading value starts to recover, then the rebound would have a better structural foundation. When pushing toward $2.683, it is still necessary to see whether volume indicates supportive follow-through—not just whether there is a single long lower wick.
The above is a structural analysis based on public market data and does not constitute buy or sell advice. ORCA volatility is high, and contract leverage contracts quickly; chasing price up, selling impulsively, and smoothing positions with high leverage can all magnify losses.
