Today, my wife and I had lunch at home at 3:30 p.m.: rice with grated carrot, baked plantains, and a fried egg seasoned with salt and pepper. Sprinkled with chopped parsley. 20 minutes of prep. Everything turned out wonderfully. Not because of the food itself.
The real luxury was being able to weave together the slow afternoon we wanted, enjoying a good conversation, taking our time, eating well, being in good health, and having a warm home.
We could have had lunch out, at a restaurant with a brand-name sign. But we’ve learned that flashy things are nice; yes, but they aren’t luxury.
