Solana’s next speed boost enters public testing
Solana is publicly testing the Alpenglow upgrade, aiming to significantly reduce transaction finality times. CoinDesk reports that Solana’s current finality takes about 12.8 seconds, and Alpenglow wants to bring it down to around 150 milliseconds. For users, the way wallets operate won’t change; the improvements will first appear in exchange deposits, cross-chain bridge payouts, and merchant payments—these systems can confirm transactions as irreversible more quickly.
This time is still just a migration to a public testnet, not a mainnet rollout. Alpenglow will replace the existing TowerBFT with Votor, using direct voting by validators to reduce on-chain voting wait time; the first round of testing supports only Agave, and Firedancer and Frankendancer have not yet been integrated. The speed goals are certainly compelling, but whether it can become stable public infrastructure depends on whether different validator software can successfully complete the migration together. How much users ultimately feel the speedup will depend on when exchanges, cross-chain bridges, and merchants are willing to remove waiting steps.
