$BNB, I almost lost twelve thousand RMB on this round. Not an exaggeration—it's a real number. At the time, BNB was around $802. I watched the 24-hour trading volume hit $553 million and thought the liquidity was enough, so I impulsively placed a big order at 800. Then right after buying, it started to drop. The low was smashed down to 780, and my account showed an unrealized loss of nearly 3% in an instant. When I converted my position, I was almost down twelve thousand RMB. Even though it rebounded back to around 789 and I only ended up losing the fees and a bit of slippage, that fear of “what if I didn’t hold and cut at 780” still makes me uneasy to this day. My mistake was really stupid.
First, I saw the 24h high at 802 and the low at 780, and in my head I told myself, “The volatility is only 2.8%—the mainstream coin is pretty stable.” I completely ignored how BNB has recently been moving in sync with the broader market.
Second, I clearly saw the 24h price change was -1.38%—a bearish candle—and still insisted on catching a falling knife. I thought, “If it dips a little, that’s an opportunity.”
Third, the $553 million trading volume sounds big, but that day the overall market sentiment was weak. That amount of volume wasn’t enough to absorb the sell pressure at all.
To put it bluntly, I treated the words “mainstream coin” as an invincibility card. I forgot that even if BNB is a mainstream coin, it will still get smashed when the market gets hit.
Looking back, the only reason that order was able to come out alive is luck. If BTC had dropped another leg at the time—if BNB went down to 760 or even 750—I would most likely have panic-sold. Then the twelve thousand would really be gone.
So I want to use this as a lesson to remind myself, and also remind you:
First, don’t go heavy on a bottom-buy in a bearish (red) candle, even if it’s BNB.
Second, when looking at the 24h low price and the trading volume, you have to factor in the overall market sentiment—not just assume it’s safe because the numbers are big.
Third, for every trade, first figure out “If it drops to the low, how much will I lose?” Then decide whether to place the order. That time, I did it backwards—I placed the order first and did the math afterward.
BNB is now at 789. The 24h change is -1.38%. It looks calm and steady, but remember that twelve thousand RMB loss I almost suffered. Mainstream coins aren’t a safe box. The lower the price gets, the more you should ask yourself: Am I investing, or am I betting on a rebound? Let’s talk?
