The House of Representatives Committee approved a bill that would enshrine in law the existing U.S. Strategic Bitcoin Reserve and prohibit the sale of the corresponding federal bitcoins for 20 years. The proposed bill would codify the current policy of the executive branch into federal law.
Bitcoins that legally belong to the federal government and are not required by law for other purposes would be subject to the statutorily established 20-year holding period under legislation considered by the House key committee. The most recent actions by Congress on the bill H.R. 8957 provide for the amended document to be sent for further consideration, although its implementation still requires House passage, Senate approval, and President Donald Trump’s signature.
The proposed bill states:
«The Secretary shall retain all bitcoins acquired by the United States and added to the Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, regardless of the method of acquisition, for at least 20 years from the date this law takes effect; after the date this law takes effect…»
