🚨 The ECB officially “goes on-chain”! What exactly has Pontes changed?🔥

The European Central Bank has recently released a signal worth close attention: on September 21, the euro system formally activated the Pontes settlement platform to support trading tokenized securities, and to settle the related cash component using central bank money.⚡It sounds technical and professional, but the truly important part is actually very simple:
Conventional securities are trying to move into blockchain infrastructure, while central bank funds are starting to become part of this new settlement system.
Pontes can be understood as a “bridge.”
On one side, it connects the blockchain networks where tokenized securities reside; on the other, it connects the ECB’s existing payment systems, enabling banks and securities institutions to complete securities settlement in a distributed ledger environment, while using central bank money for cash settlement.
So how is this different from ordinary “stock tokenization”?👀
The key lies in cash and responsibility.
If the cash portion of a tokenized asset depends on stablecoins or commercial bank deposits, there is credit risk from the issuer or even from the banks themselves. But with settlement using central bank money, the cash settlement risk is clearly different.
What’s even more noteworthy is that the participants in Pontes are not just a few small crypto projects. The ECB has listed participating institutions including Deutsche Bank, the Deutsche Bundesbank, the European Investment Bank, Santander, and others—along with DLT infrastructure providers such as Clearstream and Cashlink.
This shows one thing:
Tokenized securities are moving from being a “blockchain industry experiment” into discussions within traditional financial infrastructure.🔥 But one point must be kept clearly separate. Pontes is not the ECB starting to offer ordinary people Bitcoin trading services, nor is it the official launch of the digital euro. At present, it mainly serves wholesale market participants such as banks and securities depositories, and the settlement focus is also on tokenized securities.
