Young people don’t buy homes, don’t get married, and don’t work hard—yet they’re berated for “lying flat.”

“Lying flat” isn’t giving up; it’s a rational work stoppage.

Under a system of slavery, the lowest-cost form of resistance has never been rebellion—it’s go-slack work. When the return on effort falls below the survival line, diligence turns into self-exploitation. Japan’s low-desire society went first by twenty years—not because they’re lazy, but because they calculated earlier than we did. One house costs out six wallets. One wedding puts you in debt for three years. One child equals a twenty-year cash-flow black hole. You don’t need an economics degree to do this math—elementary arithmetic is enough.

Some will say “lying flat” is cowardice. Cowardice is fear; “lying flat” is having done the calculations. People who are afraid are still working overtime, while those who’ve calculated have already stepped out.

When the ladder is pulled away, standing still is the most rational way to climb.
