Bessent: Washington intervenes in the yen market for the sake of what it has for Japan
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Japan should take further steps to support the yen, following a joint US-Japan intervention in the currency market in late July and early August—an indication that Washington expects Tokyo to play its part in supporting the Japanese currency.
During the G20 meetings in North Carolina, Bessent met with Japan’s Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda and Japan’s finance minister Katsunobu Kato, where he expressed his hope that the central bank would make the “right decision” regarding monetary policy.
Bessent’s remarks point to increasing US pressure on the Bank of Japan to adopt a more tight monetary policy, especially with the September meeting approaching. Markets are currently pricing in about a 74% chance of a rise in Japanese interest rates, while forecasts point to roughly 80 basis points of cumulative increases by next June.
