Can Bitcoin Staking Work Without Smart Contracts?
People often say smart contracts are required for advanced blockchain applications. I used to think that was true for staking as well.
Then I started reading Babylon's Bitcoin Staking paper, and I found something that surprised me. Babylon explores a way to build Bitcoin staking without relying on traditional smart contracts.
What caught my attention was how the design works with Bitcoin's own scripting system instead of trying to turn Bitcoin into something it isn't. The staking process is built around a set of Bitcoin transactions that define how $BTC can be staked, unbonded, or slashed if someone breaks the rules.
I like this approach because it respects Bitcoin's original design. Instead of adding a full smart contract layer, Babylon explores how Bitcoin's existing features can be used in a different way to support trustless staking.
It's still early, and there's a lot to learn about how this will work over time. But I think it's interesting that one of the biggest ideas in Bitcoin staking doesn't come from making Bitcoin more complex. It comes from making better use of what Bitcoin already has.
