Arbitrum, the leading Ethereum Layer 2 scaling solution, has announced the launch and airdrop of its native token, ARB.

It’s official — there’s a new Layer-2 token on the block.

Ethereum
Recently announced the launch and airdrop of its native governance token ARB.
Since its launch in 2021, the network has become one of the largest tokenless projects, generating excitement and anticipation for its upcoming launch.
ARB drives Arbitrum governance
Arbitrum is an Optimistic Rollup solution that moves network operations from the Ethereum mainnet while still maintaining Ethereum-level security. It runs on its own blockchain, allowing developers to deploy smart contracts that can process more transactions per second, thereby reducing overall fees.
According to the latest data from L2 Beat, Arbitrum currently dominates the L2 wars, holding 55% of the market share in terms of total value locked (TVL). The total value of Arbitrum’s locked assets has increased by more than 20% in the past 7 days to $3.85 billion, coinciding with high network activity on the network and potential upside from scheduled airdrops.
The growth of Arbitrum's TVL and its dominance are good indicators of its thriving ecosystem, with leading protocols such as GMX, Uniswap, Camelot, and many other DEXs running on the network. In comparison, alternative layer-2 competitors such as Optimism and Polygon have relatively low TVL. This widespread adoption and trust from the project and the wider community is a positive sign for the growth and success of the Arbitrum ecosystem.
Along with other L2 projects like Optimism, the launch of ARB will be a key milestone in the network’s journey toward becoming a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO). Unlike other tokens like Ether — Ethereum’s native token used to pay for network transaction fees — ARB will be used exclusively for protocol governance on Arbitrum.
Prior to the announcement, Offchain Labs, the developer behind the Arbitrum ecosystem, was the sole entity responsible for making decisions and adjustments to the network. After the announcement and the upcoming token launch, control will be handed over to its community.
The network will grant holders the ability to vote on changes to the Arbitrum One and Arbitrum Nova networks, which allow users to transact on the Ethereum blockchain at faster speeds and with lower fees.
The implemented governance process will be automated: voting will directly influence and execute on-chain decisions without the involvement of intermediaries. The voting process will take at least 21 to 37 days to pass before a proposal is executed, ensuring that users have enough time to react to any changes.
ARB Airdrop and Eligibility
The Arbitrum Foundation announced that ARB will be airdropped to eligible early community members on Thursday, March 23, 2023.
Working with crypto analytics firm Nansen, Arbitrum monitored user behavior in February to determine eligibility for ARB tokens. Factors used to determine eligibility include:
The number of transactions executed.
Number of applications used.
Arbitrum One and Nitro usage time.
According to a statement released by Nansen, a total of 625,142 addresses were eligible out of the 2.3 million wallets bridged on the Arbitrum One chain, with 28% of these addresses being bridged to Arbitrum One before February 6, 2023.
According to Steven Goldfeder, co-founder and CEO of Offchain Labs, eligible users will be determined by internal eligibility criteria. Interested users can check their airdrop qualifications on the website.
Token Allocation

ARB will have a total issuance of 10 billion tokens. The Arbitrum community will control 56% of the tokens, including:
11.5% will be allocated to the Arbitrum community.
1.1% will be provided to DAOs operating in the Arbitrum ecosystem.
The Arbitrum DAO will distribute the remaining community tokens through the treasury.
The remaining 44% of ARB tokens will go to Offchain Labs. Both investor and team tokens have a vesting period of four years, with the first unlock scheduled within one year, followed by regular unlocks over the next three years.
Final Thoughts
While the launch of ARB has taken longer than expected compared to direct competitors such as Optimism, Goldfeder assured the community that Arbitrum has reached certain technical milestones, such as working fraud proofs (the technology that supports Arbitrum One’s unparalleled security), surpassing its main competitor by a significant margin.
Nonetheless, the launch of ARB is a significant milestone for Arbitrum and the entire L2 ecosystem. As more and more projects explore layer 2 scaling solutions, the launch of a governance token for one of the leading solutions, such as Arbitrum, is a clear indication of the maturity of the ecosystem.
