The Bank of England (BoE) and the UK Treasury believe that the UK may need to create a central bank digital currency (CBDC) by 2030. A government source said that the "digital pound" roadmap will be announced next week, and the deputy governor of the Bank of England, Jon Cunliffe, is scheduled to speak on the latest work on CBDC on February 7. Governor Andrew Bailey and UK Finance Minister Jeremy Hunt noted that "based on our work to date, the Bank of England and the UK Treasury have judged that a digital pound is likely to be needed in the future". The Bank of England announced that it will soon publish a joint consultation report on the digital pound. (The Daily Telegraph)
