Known as the “Docteur Apocalypse” (Doomsday Doctor), the well-known economist Nouriel Roubini has long criticized cryptocurrencies, but has recently announced that he will launch his own cryptocurrency—prompting sharp mockery from Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao.
In a statement dated October 31, Roubini’s Atlas Capital (Atlas Capital) said the company is rolling out the Atlas Climate Token, a blockchain-based stablecoin that will be pegged to a “carefully selected basket of assets” in the real world, including climate-resilient real estate investment trusts, inflation-protected government bonds, gold, and other commodities.
For years, Roubini has been one of the most outspoken critics in the cryptocurrency space, calling Bitcoin a “shitcoin,” mocking Ethereum as worthless, and even ridiculing blockchain technology as “no better than spreadsheets.”
And now, Roubini wants to launch his own cryptocurrency. In response to this news, Binance founder Changpeng Zhao posted on social media this week, saying: “Some people are truly shameless.”
Zhao Changpeng’s criticism of Roubini is not only due to the dramatic shift in his stance on cryptocurrency, but also includes personal factors, because Roubini had previously made public criticisms of Binance and even Zhao himself.
Last November, shortly after the collapse of FTX, Roubini repeatedly criticized Changpeng Zhao at an event in Abu Dhabi, calling him a “walking time bomb.”
At the time, Roubini said that cryptocurrencies can be described using English words starting with the letter C—secretive, corrupt, deceptive, criminal, fraudulent, price-inflating, and CZ. And the last CZ refers to Zhao Changpeng.
However, a few months later, Roubini’s new crypto venture, Atlas Capital, boasted about the experience of a member of its leadership team at Binance, as evidence of the new company’s sincerity.
Zhao Changpeng went on to say in his post: “After publicly attacking Binance a year ago, (Roubini) now launches a token without authorization and puts Binance’s logo on their website.”
Since Zhao Changpeng published this post, Atlas Capital has removed from its “team” page the logos of all external companies, including Binance. However, its website still claims that the company benefits from the “extensive experience” of former Binance employees, including its Chief Product Officer, Mayur Kamat, who previously served as Global Head of Product at Binance.
