For nearly two decades, the Swiss artist Leander Herzog has devoted himself to exploring the fusion of code and abstract animation on the web. His works are held in collections by institutions such as the Karlsruhe Art and Media Center (ZKM Karlsruhe), the University of the Arts Basel (HEK Basel), and the Francisco Carolinum Linz, and have been exhibited at venues including Kunsthalle Zürich and Transmediale Berlin.
We sat down with Herzog to discuss his ongoing on-chain works (Infinite Garden) presented at the 2026 Basel Art Fair Zero 10, the metaphor of the garden—what it means to hand authorship over to the collector—and how he thinks about creating a work of art meant to outlast his lifetime.
