According to the World Health Organization (WHO), onchocerciasis affects mainly rural populations in sub-Saharan Africa and Yemen, although smaller endemic foci have been found in some parts of Latin America.
The Venezuelan Ministry of Health reported that it deployed medical teams to 14 indigenous communities in the state of Amazonas, together with the Amazon Research Center (SA-CAICET), to eradicate onchocerciasis, a chronic parasitic infection caused by a worm and transmitted by the bite of blackflies.
