A giant U.S. custodian bank is now officially custodying XRP and RLUSD—not just its stablecoin reserves, but the assets themselves.
The facts: Ripple and BNY announced on Oct. 27 at Swell 2026 in New York that they are expanding their partnership: BNY’s Digital Asset Custody platform now supports XRP and RLUSD, allowing eligible institutional clients to store, hold, and transfer both assets under the bank’s governance. This goes beyond BNY’s previous role as the primary custodian of RLUSD reserves and Ripple Prime’s custody partner. Looking ahead, BNY plans to support more tokenized assets and investment products on the XRP Ledger, and to let its clients mint and redeem RLUSD directly through the bank—but no timeline has been announced.
My take: the distinction matters and is often blurred. Holding the dollar reserves backing a stablecoin is not the same as holding the coins themselves. With direct custody support, institutions no longer have to rely on specialized crypto custodians to hold XRP or RLUSD—the assets can be held within the banking infrastructure they already use. But let’s be clear: custody is not a buy order. This opens the door; it doesn’t move money. XRP is around $1.3227 tonight, and the market is still waiting for the Fed on Oct. 29 at 01:00 WIB.
What I’m watching: when direct RLUSD minting and redemption through BNY actually becomes available, whether any initial institutional flows are confirmed, and announcements on the second and third days of Swell.
Do you think custody from a major bank like this matters more for institutional adoption, or will the market only react when the money actually starts flowing?
This is my analysis, not financial advice—always DYOR.
