Thinking Machines Lab releases Inkling 2 Small: an MoE with 594B total parameters and about 17B active, supporting image input and adjustable reasoning effort, with evaluation traces reaching up to about 1M context.

Initially available as a closed-source model through Tinker (inference/fine-tuning/Playground), it’s planned for an Apache 2.0 open-weight release next week, after safety testing and external red-teaming. It shows improvements in coding, vision, and knowledge work, and also performs well on enterprise benchmarks.

Another “near-frontier” option joins the open-source camp—starting closed before opening up is a cautious approach, but the real test is whether the weights actually ship.
