Today I saw a math post on X. My first reaction was: “I don’t understand this, but 39.10 million views are definitely worth stopping to figure it out.”
Here’s what it’s basically about: the Jacobi conjecture proposed in 1939 troubled the math community for 87 years. With help from Fable 5, mathematician Levent Alpoge found a counterexample, and then simply dropped three lines of formulas directly onto X. There was no press conference, no countdown—heck, even the start was just a casual “hello there.” The post then shot up to about 43,000 likes and 5,300 reposts.
But the easiest thing to get misled by is the title. It’s not “AI wakes up and independently solves a century-old challenge.” It’s more like: mathematicians know where to dig, the AI tirelessly tries a massive number of routes, and then humans check at the end—does this path really lead through?
IBM’s summary of this is spot-on: AI finds the breakthrough, and humans are responsible for calling out that one ball. Machines are good at pushing the search space to places human physical endurance can’t reach; human value is proposing good questions, identifying meaningful results, and turning answers into credible knowledge.
Honestly, this matters to me more than “will AI replace anyone.” Going forward, the real gap-maker might not be who gets a stronger model first, but who understands better what to ask, what to verify, and when not to blindly trust a model.
AI is becoming a new kind of research partner. It moves fast, but the steering wheel is still in human hands.
