Project Eleven has funded a cryptographic trial designed to address a key vulnerability in Bitcoin’s security model: the threat that quantum computers may eventually forge wallet signatures, making traditional ownership verification unreliable.
The solution uses the wallet’s proprietary key derivation path as an alternative proof of ownership—an approach that remains valid even if signature-based verification is compromised. The proof runs in 243 milliseconds on a standard laptop, suggesting it could be practical at scale.
It’s worth noting that the tool does not cover approximately 1.1 million coins belonging to Satoshi Nakamoto, which use an older address format that lacks the key derivation structure the proof relies on. Such funds are out of scope for any quantum recovery mechanism described in the research.
