He invested 1,500 pounds in Bitcoin and 12 years later recovered 4.5 million dollars
After twelve years without being able to access them, a British investor recovered bitcoins currently valued at nearly 4.5 million dollars. Identified under the pseudonym Chris, he initially invested 1,500 pounds in bitcoin in 2011 through the exchange platform Intersango. The recovery does not come from finding an old password. Lawyers established his ownership rights thanks to court documents, bank statements, and tracking tools.
A Briton recovers 61 bitcoins after twelve years without access to his funds.
His initial investment of 1,500 pounds is now worth nearly 4.5 million dollars.
Bank statements and court documents made it possible to establish his ownership rights.
The law firm handling the case used blockchain analysis to recover the cryptocurrencies.
More than 5,500 BTC linked to former Intersango clients could still be claimed.
Twelve years without access to bitcoins that became millions
Chris bought his first bitcoins in December 2011 through Britcoin, later renamed Intersango, just as bitcoin had only just surpassed a decisive threshold. The British platform ran into trouble in late 2012 before disappearing in early 2014. Since then, the investor’s account was blocked when he tried to withdraw his funds.
His assets were worth nearly 4,000 pounds. Then, their value grew over more than a decade without the owner being able to recover them. He confessed:
It was a gut punch watching bitcoin keep going up again and again.
The timeline of this story helps shed more light on this recovery:
Chris invested around 1,500 pounds in bitcoin in 2011;
His Intersango account became inaccessible in early 2014;
Its value reached nearly 3.3 million pounds, or approximately 4.5 million dollars.
