The project claims 325 million-plus transactions, more than $6 billion in DEX volume, over $40 million in ecosystem revenue, and more than 4 million Abstract Global Wallets. It also cites more than 100 apps and over 400,000 users. Yet it simultaneously says growth stagnated because DeFi remained restricted, liquidity was thin, institutional crossover was minimal, and operating the chain was unsustainable.

Abstract is shutting down on December 15, 2026.

Igloo says it spent tens of millions of dollars over the past two years trying to keep Abstract running and find product-market fit.

The decision comes as operating costs remain high, liquidity stays limited, the DeFi ecosystem remains restricted, and market demand weakens.

Igloo will now shift its focus back to Pudgy Penguins, Pudgy NFTs, and PENGU.

A tough ending for Abstract, but a clear signal that even well-funded projects eventually need sustainable economics.

Abstract, Pudgy Penguins’ layer 2, $PENGU , is shutting down on December 15. Igloo funded it for 18 months and lost tens of millions. They scrapped a token to extend the runway and will focus the budget on the IP. It’s the second Ethereum network, $ETH , to announce a shutdown in a week, after Blast.

There were more than 325 million transactions and around 400,000 users, but fees weren’t enough to cover operating costs. Nearly 76 million remains to be bridged before the shutdown.

How many consumer L2s are living off the balance sheet of whoever founded them, rather than fee revenue?

ABSTRACT ANNOUNCES NETWORK SHUTDOWN ON 15/12/2026

If you still have assets on @AbstractChain, make sure to move them out before the deadline.

According to reports citing the announcement, any assets that haven’t been bridged off the network will become inaccessible after the chain shuts down.
The reasons given were slowing growth, thin liquidity, and an unsustainable model focused on consumer crypto. CEO Luca Netz said Igloo had taken losses of tens of millions of dollars to maintain Abstract. The team decided not to issue a token and continue funding the network when they weren’t convinced there was real demand for one.

For those of you who’ve been farming XP all this time, this is undoubtedly disappointing news. After all that effort waiting for an airdrop, the first thing to do now is check your assets and move them all out.
