Les wallets crypto : comment ça fonctionne vraiment
Quand tu commences en crypto, l’une des premières choses que tu entends c’est : “pas tes clés, pas tes coins”. Pour comprendre ce que ça signifie, il faut d’abord comprendre ce qu’est un wallet et comment il fonctionne.
Un wallet ne stocke pas tes cryptos
C’est le premier malentendu à corriger. Un wallet crypto ne contient pas réellement tes cryptomonnaies. Tes actifs restent sur la blockchain. Ce que le wallet stocke, ce sont tes clés : une clé publique et une clé privée.
La clé publique est ton adresse de réception. Tu peux la partager librement, comme un numéro de compte bancaire. Quelqu’un qui veut t’envoyer des cryptos a besoin de cette adresse.
La clé privée est ce qui prouve que tu es le propriétaire de ces actifs et ce qui te permet de les dépenser. Elle ne doit jamais être partagée avec personne, sous aucun prétexte. Celui qui possède ta clé privée contrôle tes fonds.
Les différents types de wallets
Il existe deux grandes catégories : les wallets chauds et les wallets froids.
Un wallet chaud est connecté à internet. C’est le cas des wallets intégrés aux exchanges comme Binance, ou des applications mobiles comme Trust Wallet ou MetaMask. Ils sont pratiques pour les transactions fréquentes, mais plus exposés aux risques de piratage puisqu’ils sont en ligne en permanence.
Un wallet froid est hors ligne. Le plus courant est le hardware wallet, un appareil physique comme un Ledger ou un Trezor. Tes clés privées ne quittent jamais l’appareil et ne touchent jamais internet. C’est la solution la plus sécurisée pour stocker des montants importants sur le long terme.
Custodial vs non-custodial
C’est une distinction importante que beaucoup ignorent.
Un wallet custodial signifie qu’un tiers, généralement un exchange, détient tes clés privées à ta place. Quand tu laisses tes cryptos sur Binance, techniquement tu ne contrôles pas directement tes actifs. Tu fais confiance à la plateforme. Si elle est piratée ou fait faillite, tes fonds peuvent être en danger.
Un wallet non-custodial signifie que tu détiens toi-même tes clés privées. Tu as le contrôle total. Mais cela implique aussi une responsabilité totale : si tu perds ta clé privée ou ta phrase de récupération, personne ne peut t’aider à retrouver tes fonds.
La phrase de récupération
Quand tu crées un wallet non-custodial, on te génère une phrase de récupération composée généralement de 12 ou 24 mots dans un ordre précis. Cette phrase permet de restaurer ton wallet sur n’importe quel appareil si tu perds accès au premier.
Elle doit être notée sur papier, conservée dans un endroit sûr, et jamais stockée en ligne ou envoyée par message. Quiconque obtient cette phrase a accès total à tes fonds.
Quelle solution choisir ?
Pour les débutants qui utilisent Binance régulièrement, le wallet de la plateforme est suffisant pour commencer. Pour des montants plus importants ou une détention long terme, un hardware wallet est fortement recommandé. L’idéal à terme est de combiner les deux : un wallet chaud pour les transactions du quotidien, et un wallet froid pour l’épargne crypto.
La sécurité de tes actifs commence par la compréhension de ces mécanismes. En crypto, il n’y a pas de service client pour récupérer des fonds perdus.
