Labor’s "Razor Gang" Targets NDIS Sustainability Ahead of May Budget

The Australian federal government has quietly established a specialized NDIS Sustainability Taskforce to identify significant cost-cutting options for the $52bn program. Led by former Treasury official Anthea Long, the taskforce is charged with reining in spending growth as the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) faces projections that could see it overtake defense spending in the national budget.

Current growth sits at 10.3%, well above the government’s 8% target. Health Minister Mark Butler and NDIS Minister Jenny McAllister are now working to drive that growth down further to a target of 5% to 6% annually.

Focus on Integrity: Both the government and opposition have emphasized the need to eliminate fraud and "dodgy operators" to preserve taxpayer funds.

While Prime Minister Anthony Albanese maintains that the NDIS has made an "enormous difference" in lives, the upcoming May budget is expected to reflect these new, stricter fiscal realities.
