Ethereum is secure but busy. A rollup does the work off to the side, bundles hundreds of transactions together, then posts a compressed summary back to Ethereum.
Result: cheaper, faster transactions that still lean on Ethereum's security.
The OP Stack is a toolkit for building these. That's why chains like Immutable are moving to it.
