I was on my phone at 1:40 a.m. when the alert hit. LSK. Up 12.44% in 24 hours.

On a chain that had officially gone dark at the end of October.

I almost ignored it. A dead project bouncing is noise. Then I checked the funding rate. It was still negative. Shorts were still paying longs to stay in a trade that was already working against them.

I've been on that side before. Back in 2021, I shorted a token because the narrative was dead and the price was bleeding. The funding was negative, so I thought I was getting paid to be right. Three minutes later, a single green candle took me out. I remember refreshing the page like the number would come back.

It didn't. The lesson wasn't about direction. It was about understanding who was bleeding to stay in the game.

Here's what actually happened with LSK.

The old Lisk chain was completely disconnected at the end of October. The new direction has no visible users. By any fundamental measure, this token should be worthless.

But the market doesn't trade fundamentals. It trades positioning.

LSK was trading below its 7-day, 25-day, and 99-day moving averages for days. Every bounce got sold. The crowd piled into shorts expecting the dead chain to keep dying. Then the bounce came anyway.

That's the part nobody's saying. 🤓

The rally wasn't driven by demand. It was driven by a vacuum. Thin order books on a micro-cap with a burned float. Shorts who overstayed their welcome. When there are no sellers left, even a dead token can rip.

The same thing happened across the broader market this week. Bitcoin crashed below $76,000, triggering over $1 billion in liquidations. Then it reversed violently back above $64,000, wiping out another $602 million in shorts. Over 103,000 traders were liquidated. The largest single order was a $12.1 million BTC short on Binance that never stood a chance.

The crowd was positioned for pain on both sides. They got it.

I'm not bullish on LSK. The chain is dead. The product is gone. I'm not bearish either. I'm saying the people shorting a 12% bounce on a dead token are late to the trade and paying for the privilege.

The level that matters for LSK is $0.178. That's where it closed after the bounce, below the $0.183 support it lost. If it holds above that and the funding stays negative, the shorts who've been paying for days start feeling the margin pressure. If it breaks lower, the next support is thin. Micro-cap order books don't have depth. The same vacuum that let it rip can let it collapse.

But the real level isn't on LSK's chart. It's the funding rate across the market. When shorts are paying longs to stay bearish on dead tokens and majors alike, the squeeze fuel is building. That doesn't mean price has to reverse tomorrow. It means the pain is sitting on one side.

Liquidation cascades don't tell you direction. They tell you positioning. And the positioning just got violently reset.

If you shorted a dead token this week, did you check who was paying whom — or did you just get angry when it bounced?
